The Night Gardener

One day, William discovers that the tree outside his window has been sculpted into a wise owl. Each day, more topiaries appear, each one more beautiful than the last. Soon, William’s grey little town is full of colour and life. And, though the mysterious night gardener disappears as suddenly as he appeared, William and his town are changed forever.

Main Focus: Adjectives

We have created a resource that focuses on adjectives to help your class word on their descriptive writing.

We have taken a passage from The Night Gardener story and your Year 1 / Year 2 class will complete the sentences by adding in adjectives.

They will them think of adjectives to describe other animals that feature in the story.

Main Focus: Word Mat & Cloze Activity

We have included this resource to use when writing or recounting the story independently as a reference point but also as a cloze style activity.

Your class will use the words on the word mat to complete the sentences.

You can also use the words in the second box as discussion linked to vocabulary.

Main Focus: Punctuation

In this activity your class will punctuate the sentences taken from the book by adding in the capital letters and full stops.

We have differentiated this resource to cater for Year 1 and Year 2 classes and have included simple and more complex sentences.

Main Focus: Phonics

This is a phonics resource that explores various phases in phonics.

Your Year 1 / Year 2 class must find the sounds within the passage.

We have differentiated the resource but also included a blank resource so you or your class can choose their sounds.

Main Focus: Alphabetical Order

In this activity, your class will read the extract from The Night Gardener book and place the chosen words into alphabetical order.

Main Focus: Comprehension

We have created 6 different comprehensions to cater for your KS1 class.

Your class will be asked a range of questions linked to the entire The Night Gardener story.

Main Focus: Story Sequencing

In this resource, your KS1 class will read the events from The Night Gardener book, cut them out and order them accordingly.

This is a useful resource to complete once you have read the entire book as it will show you how your class remember the events and if they can sequence them into chronological order.

Main Focus: Character Study and Comparison

This is a fantastic reading resource that allows your class to focus on the two main characters of the story – William and the Night Gardener.

We have included a fact file about the two characters as well as wrote information about similarities and differences between the two characters. We have included some factual information within this too.

Some information is based on retrieval and other on inference.

Main Focus: Vocabulary Extension

This reading activity focuses on the vocabulary used in The Night Gardener story.

Your class will add in the new words to complete the sentences.

They will also look at words and meanings/simple synonyms to improve their understanding. It would be best to complete this activity before adding the words to the sentences.

Main Focus: Asking Questions

In this activity, your KS1 class will use the information in the answers to help them write suitable questions.

We have also included a resource that allows your Year 1 or Year 2 class match the questions to the answers.
