The Troll by Julia Donaldson

The Troll longs for a juicy goat to eat – but he’s stuck with boring old fish for supper. Bother! Meanwhile, Hank Chief and his pirate crew love fish, but without a decent recipe their slimy, soggy dinner is even worse. If only they could find their buried treasure and pay for a ship’s cook . . . but it seems they’ve sailed to the wrong island. Again.

Main Focus: Alphabetical Order

In this reading activity, your Year 1 or Year 2 class will read the passage and place the chosen words into alphabetical order.

We have differentiated the resource to cater for different levels of alphabetical order and have included a resource to allow your class to choose words to challenge themselves.

This is a punctuation activity aimed at Ks1 classes linked to The Troll book.

Your class must punctuate the sentences by adding in capital letters and full stops to simple and complex sentences.

This reading resource has been differentiated for year 1 and year 2 classes.

Main Focus: Vocabulary Extension

This resource explores some of the interesting vocabulary used by Julia Donaldson in The Troll.

We have chosen the following words: Complained, Furious, Suggested, Unsuspecting, Disappointed and Misleading.

Your KS1 class must choose simple synonyms for these words and place them into the sentences to complete the passage.

Main Focus: Word Mat & Cloze

In this resource, your class will complete the sentences by filling in the missing words or using the picture from the word mat.

This could also be used to accompany some independent writing.

Main Focus: Word Class

In this reading resource, your class must read the passage and identify the nouns, verbs and adjectives.

Your Year 2 class will place the words into the nouns, verbs and adjectives categories.

Main Focus: Adjectives

In this activity your class will read the passage and the word bank of adjectives and place the adjectives into the correct places.

Main Focus: Questions

This activity encourages your class to develop their questioning skills and understanding.

Your class will read the given answers based on the story and they will create a question using the information given in the answer.

Main Focus: Story Sequencing

In this activity, your Year 1 / Year 2 class must read the events from The Troll story carefully and place them into chronological order.

It might be helpful to give your Year 1 class the time to cut out the events so they can place them into order and if they get mixed up it is easily changed.

This sequencing resource has been differentiated for KS1 classes although for some readers you may wish to read through the events as a group.

After reading The Troll by Julia Donaldson, we have created this comprehension aimed at Year 1 and Year 2 children.

Your class will answer questions linked to the book and we have differentiated the resource to cater for different abilities.
