The Hodgeheg

Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but unfortunately on the wrong side of the road from the Park, with its beautiful lily pond, and more importantly its juicy slugs, worms and snails!
The busy road is a dangerous barrier but Max notices that humans seem to cross it quite easily. If they can, why can’t hedgehogs? So Max sets out on a quest to find a safe way to reach the Park.
His first attempt ends in a nasty bump on the head, and Max finds when he tries to speak his words are all mixed up. He is now a Hodgeheg, not a hedgehog, but he is still determined to fulfil his mission.
After some careful detective work, Max eventually discovers the best way to cross the road – with the help of the lollipop lady, of course!

Main Focus: Phonics

This is a phonics resource that focuses on chapter 2 of the story.

Your class must find the different sounds from the phases in phonics from the words in the passage.

We also created a resource so you can choose the sounds.

Main Focus: Contractions

In this activity your class will explore contractions.

They will begin to recognise that a contraction is made up of two words and what those two words are.

This resource uses sentences from The Hodgeheg book and is aimed at Year 2 and Year 3.

Main Focus: Inverted Commas (Chapter 3)

This is a resource linked to inverted commas.

Your class must insert the speech marks or inverted commas into the passage.

We have differentiated the resource so you can choose the best resource for your Year 2 and Year 3 groups.

Main Focus: Comprehension (Chapter 1-5)

This is a comprehension linked to the book The Hodgeheg and is aimed at Year 2 / Year 3 classes.

Your KS1 children will answer the questions based on chapters 1-5 of the book.

Main Focus: Vocabulary Extension (Chapters 4 & 5)

This resource explores the vocabulary used within chapters 4 and 5 of the story.

Your Year 2 / Year 3 class will look at the word used within context and meanings and also applied to new contexts.

Main Focus: Punctuation (Chapter 6)

This is a resource that focuses on adding punctuation to the passage.

Your Year 2 / Year 3 class will add in the capital letters, full stops, commas, question marks and exclamation marks.

We have differentiated this resource to cater for both Year 2 and Year 3 classes.

Main Focus: Adjectives (Chapter 8)

This resource aimed at year 2 focuses on adding in adjectives to complete the sentences within the passage.

Your KS1 class will read the passage and add in adjectives of their choice or using the resource with the word bank. They will then think of adjectives that best describe the animals in the picture.

Main Focus: Comprehension (Chapters 5-9)

This is a comprehension linked to The Hodgeheg book aimed at Year 2 and Year 3.

Your class will read the chapters and refer to them if required.
