This is a popular book for children aged 7-9 / LSK2 / Year 3 / Year 4 and we have created literacy teaching resources to help reduce your workload.

Main Focus: Alphabetical Order - Chapter 1

This literacy activity is linked to alphabetical order and has been differentiated a number for ways for LKS2 classes.

Your class will read the extract taken from chapter 1 of The Worst Witch and place the selected words into alphabetical order.

Main Focus: Inverted Commas - Chapter 2

This punctuation activity linked to chapter 2 of the book focuses on inverted commas. Prior knowledge of inverted commas is essential as this is a consolidation resource to show their understanding.

Your LKS2 class will read the extracts taken from the book and insert the speech marks in the correct places.

We have differentiated this literacy resource to cater for different abilities within Year 3 and Year 4 classes.

Main Focus: Vocabulary Extension Chapters 1-5

After reading chapters 1-5 from The Worst Witch book, you can hone into some of the vocabulary used and explore more with your class.

Your class must look at the word banks and be able to place the words into the sentences within the context of the story.

Main Focus: Apostrophes

In this activity, your class will be exploring how apostrophes are used within words.

First, your children must identify the position of the apostrophe and explain why is has been used: used for a contraction or to show possession.

Main Focus: Comprehension - Chapter 4

This is a comprehension resource based on chapter 4 of The Worst Witch.

Your Year 3 / Year 4 (KS2) class will read the chapter carefully and answer the questions based on their understanding and knowledge.

There are questions that range in style from retrieval to inference.

Main Focus: Past and Present Tense

This activity focuses on past and present tense and is aimed at Year 3 and Year 4.

In the first resource, your class will identify the past tense verbs from the sentences from chapter 5.

The second resource focuses on matching the tenses and completing the sentences using the correct tense.

In the passage taken from the book, your class will think of synonyms that would replace the words chosen by the author.

Main Focus: Adverbs

This reading resource focuses on adverbs in chapters 7-9 of The Worst Witch.

Your class will read through the sentences and identify the adverbs and then write a sentence of their own. The other activity involves your class adding in the adverbs to complete each sentence. You can choose which suits best for your class.

Main Focus: Word Class

In this word class activity, your class must read the sentences from chapter 9 of the book and then colour code the different classes of words.

This resource focuses on: Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs and Prepositions. It has also been differentiated.
